Plevel – Debates about omitted topics
About the project
Public talks
State:
Project has ended.
Summary:
In response to various social phenomena that often remain unexplored, we launched the Plevel (Weeds) project. It is a series of three public debates on the following concepts: toxic masculinity, gentrification, and degrowth.
We see them as Weeds
Toxic masculinity. Gentrification. Degrowth. For a long time these phenomena have been in the mainstream overlooked as weeds in between new interlocking paving or like a run-over mole on a freshly paved first class road. A spot on the road to prosperity. Growth and competition will allow us to gradually overcome everything... or not? But it turns out that these phenomena are key in the increasing crisis, which gradually turns the system into a heartless machine. It creates inequalities, oppresses the weakest and uses pain, fear and misery as an engine for the path to an unjust world. And the roles are reversed: suddenly we are the weeds – those, who point at the inequality, fight for human rights and sound the alarm before the incoming climatic disaster.

The goal of Plevel (Weeds) is to open a space for critical discussion, bring new points of view and engage the broad public with debates about topics, which generally stay at the edge of societal interest. The first gathering about far right and toxic masculinity which has successfully finished on the 18th of September in Brno. Second, regarding gentrification, was organised in Prague on the 26th of September. Last meeting was realised in Ústí nad Labem, where a debate was hosted on the topic of degrowth in secluded regions on the 9th of October in the community center Hraničář.
The project has been created in collaboration with Federation of Young European Greens (FYEG) and was co-financed by the European union.
The society is being overtaken by weeds, let's talk about it.
